Decisions about the application

Best place for my subject in the country.

Philosophy is not available at Oxford on its own, you have to combine it with physics, Politcs and Economics etc

A subject i’m really passionate about basically. Came to the subject through Religious Studies AS.

Trinity Hall, small/cute, pretty, good size, perfect location.

One Practice Interview before the Cambridge interviews.

Really think about why you want to do the subject. Really let your passion show and think about your personal statement a huge deal.
Get on some open days as well!

One essay question, 40 minutes roughly.
20 minutes on some logic problems. (similar to Critical Thinking)

One was awful, the first one was by the DoS at trinity hall and his colleague. It went very badly, logic questions worried me and they came up for over half the interview. Answered a few questions well, but one of the books put on my personal statement i had misinterpreted the message of. (very bad mistake!)

Second interview went well. W/ Admissions tutor and a post-grad of philosophy. Expressed their interest in things i put on my personal statement and which i could support. Generally a v gd interview. (20 mins roughly)

Had one pool interview at Clare about 2 weeks later. Lasted about 35 minutes, with just the DoS there. Generally went well, no topics startled me, basically what i expected after some practice. A v interesting discussion generally, didnt feel i had ‘wowed; him so felt i was nt going to get in.

Philosophy SOcieties – amoral sciences clubs etc
D of E – can i complete at Cam?
What was his opinion on an issue discussed?
Did they know a friend of mine who studied the same subject there about 5 yrs back?

Suit Trousers and a Shirt for first interview
Roll neck jumper and smart trousers for second.
Wanted to look smart but felt suit just made me feel and look uncomfortable.

Beautiful, ideal location, friendly atmosphere.

‘creeky’ at Trinity Hall, very good at Clare

Very friendly generally, porters were also legends.

generally friendly and outgoing.

Final stage

horrendous experience. waiting for letter, then pooled. waiting for phone call, then re-interviewed. waiting for outcome , another 2 weeks, eventuallly got a place.
felt they would have contacted me sooner if they wanted me so was depressing. a lot of waiting – whcih was the worse.

stayed very calm tbh. jus pleased waiting for the outcome was over. letter was very thick – nice sign :p

Looking back

of course, tho its a lot of stress its definitely worth it.

really think ur application through thoroughly and give your all. rejected – then u havent lost anything at all! all part of character building 🙂
