Details about the offer

 conditional

A in Economics, A in Mathematics (Further), A in Physics

Single maths was excluded and the A I got in French A2 (did it a year early) didn’t really count for anything.

Decisions about the application

Amazing reputation and teaching standards. Supervisions are exclusive to Oxbridge. Wanted to aim for the best!

Oxford doesn’t offer straight economics.

I find economics very interesting. I knew Cambridge was particularly heavy on maths in their course and this is what I most enjoy.

Process of elimination: colleges in good location, fairly large, tennis team, music facilities. Also Queens’ is renowned for its parties. Perfect!

Preparation

yes

Had 2 interviews with my head of Economics.

Look more into maths – especially graphs and how/why they work.

TSA – multiple choice half critical thinking / half maths problem solving.

Interviewed by 2 people – one of them very friendly the other one pleasant. Asked me alot about graphs. At the beginning asked me a bit about why Cambridge etc.

Draw this graph. Prove this relationship using differentials (theory of the firm)

Full suit without the tie, didn’t want to feel conscious about what I was wearing.

Impressions

Very friendly people. Large college but really warm environment. Nice bar!

N/A

Quite nice.

Didn’t speak to them much.

They were all very keen to put us at ease and help us out.

Final stage

First 2-3 weeks didn’t really think about it. After that really nervous. Kept thinking about “could have said this” etc.

Shouted and hugged my mum. Then called up everyone and soaked up the congrats.

Looking back

Yes. If you don’t try you’ll never know!!

Try not to worry too much afterwards. Everyone is bound to have made some mistakes in their interviews!
