Decisions about the application

The quality of teaching and research tops league tables and there are strong links with industry.
The course provides an unrivalled breadth of engineering knowledge in the 1st two years, before specializing in great depth on mechanical engineering in years 3 and 4. Graduates are in high demand from employers.

The course at Oxford seemed less flexible, not so clearly structured and generally not as appealing.

They did not encourage deferred entry, very close to the athletics track, modern facilities, doesn’t have an enclosed feeling and is probably the most relaxed and friendly college.

Preparation

yes

They gave me a mock interview, which was far far more nerve-wracking than the real thing.

Revise the year 1 physics course and maths formulae.

Interview

no

yes

They sent a small questionairre on my college and I had to write about what attracts me to read my proposed degree course.

yes

There was about an hour long test on maths and physics.

The whole affair was far more relaxed and inviting than I expected, I was made to feel at ease from the start. Everybody from the college was very friendly and they gave us a free meal too.

The 1st ‘general’ interview is there to break the ice and take away the nerves, the most relaxed of the two. Somebody will ask questions on hobbies, interests, and guage your enthusiasm & commitment for the subject. The 2nd ‘subject’ interview had 2 people interviewing me. It seemed to like a mock up of a supervision session, like they were testing how well I could be taught by them. We went over two problems, I was lead through them in small ‘A Level Physics question’ steps. Its a good experience and you take something away from it.

Trousers, shirt and shiny shoes. Its the best I have but I wouldn’t have worn a suit or tie if I had them.

Impressions

Robinson has an impressive garden with a brook, the place is very friendly.

Its the newest college and so accomodation is modern and most have en-suite. The room sizes vary. The kitchens are small and shared between a few rooms.

Excellent

It has a good reputation

They seem more ‘with you’ than anywhere else. Have a genuine interest in you.

Chatty

Final stage

I thought my interviews had gone well although I wasn’t too sure about the test so I was glad to get a place.

Looking back

Yes, it seemed the right thing to do

Make sure you do apply because theres nothing to lose and you actually gain a lot from it.
