Decisions about the application

A degree from Oxbridge will be recognised anywhere in the world such is its reputation. It is also a world leader in engineering research.

I preferred the city of Cambridge to Oxford and I also preferred the course at Cambridge.

It’s quiet and out of the way of the city centre.

Preparation

yes

Yes. I had a mock interview with the headmaster and lots of advice on the personal statement and the Cambridge form.

The forms: Write only what you will be able to back up/talk about in the interviews otherwise you may well be caught out.

The interview(s): Prepare answers to the standard questions-why choose engineering/Cambridge/Girton.
You can’t do much else, since the technical questions could be on anything.

Interview

no

3 interviews-1 general, 2 subject. In the general one we just talked about me and Cambridge for 20 minutes, while in the subject ones I had to answer some technical questions.

Why choose engineering/Cambridge/Girton. I had to do some graph drawing and talk about the forces in a car. I also had some simple electronics and circuit questions, and a question on stresses and strains which was more complex to work through with the interviewer.

Shirt and tie with smart trousers-not too formal, not too informal.

Impressions

Nice, friendly and welcoming.

I had a large room with bed and comfortable chairs and desk. Bathroom facilities were down the hall.

Good, wide variety + free for applicants:).

Generally relaxed and friendly

Very friendly and approachable and chatty. Most of them had been through it the year before.

Final stage

I was very pleased to see I had an offer.

Looking back

Yes. It was a good opportunity and experience.

There’s no harm in trying. If you don’t get in, at least you tried, and if you do, it’s a tremendous opportunity.
