Have offers from St.Andrews/York/Warwick/Manchester and Lancaster. Will take up York with perhaps St Andrew’s (much lower offer, BBC for some reason) as insurance.

Decisions about the application

Aim for the top

I applied for a combination of Engineering/Comp Science which can only be studied at Oxford.

Liked it, big WOW factor. Accom for all course. Come from C of E High School.

Preparation

yes

little

The interview(s): don’t think the questions are easy, tutors look for depth, keep talking.

Quizzed by 2 tutors at Ch Ch and at Exeter. Interview at Ch Ch ran on quite a bit which I thought was a good sign.

Quite easy, on the surface, engineering and CS questions.

smart casual, no tie

Impressions

Ch Ch v good, Oriel bit pokey, Exeter in the middle

Regular guys doing a job, not there to intimidate.

Bit posh but very friendly

Final stage

Felt useless. We all tried to be positive but we weren’t kidded.

Looking back

Yes, I still believe (having recovered) I am good enough and would do things differently. I have since found there is a consortium of seven colleges particularly looking for state students, FE in particular. Wouldn’t have applied for Eng Sc/CS either, far too few places. I would have just tried for CS.

Prepare yourself for disappointment. I was told this and didn’t understand. You keep going down there, I went to Trinity/Kings at Cam + faculty and St John’s/Oriel + faculty+ admin day at Oxford. You get to feel you belong then rejection is like falling off a cliff.
