Decisions about the application

My school encouraged me to do so.

Oxford seemed to be the larger city with more going on. I also thought it would be easier to get into than Cambridge

I went up on the open day and this was the one that struck me as the one i wanted to go. Also i was greeted by a friendly good looking undergraduate. These may not be the most serious reasons, but there is really not a lot to choose between.

Preparation

yes

I had a mock interview with my headmaster, this was extremely useful, we also had additional support in writing our personal statements.

The Forms: Make sure it corresponds to your personal statement.

The interview(s): Make sure you know about the subjects that you write in your personal statement.

The interviewers were extremely friendly and took me through it step by step. They started by asking why I wanted to study Engineering and then went on to ask me some technical questions.

I was asked to draw a graph on a whiteboard and i was asked to draw the forces on a car, and to find an expression showing which variables make it go faster. This was related to my personal statement as i am interested in motorsport.

The first i wore a shirt and tie, without a jacket because i could not take it on the train. The second i wore the same with a jumper because it was at another college and it was very cold.

Impressions

Very large and old. They seemed very traditional and at times a bit overwhelming.

The size of rooms was extremely good compared to other universities, i was lucky enough to have an en-suite room.

Good

It was not quite as I was used to and especially in the evening meal a considerable lack of choice.

Very friendly and helpful.

The students were extremely friendly and helpful also. They make all the interviewee’s feel very welcome. They were, however, what i expected from oxford.

Final stage

I was extremely surprised, it was such an achievement to actually know that i was good enough.

Looking back

I would apply to oxbridge again, the whole experience, if nothing else is worth doing just to find out about it and to see whether you are actually good enough.

Just to be polite, courteous and most of all yourself.
