Decisions about the application

Like the idea of a collegiate system, and the engineering course is general so I don’t need to specialise until later on.

Visited Cambridge on an open day, didn’t especially like the city, and they seemed to be keen on people taking a gap year for engineering which I didn’t want to do.

My college recommended it as it is keen on taking on more FE College students.

Yes, sent me on an Oxbridge Applications training day.

The Forms: If there’s something about you that makes you stand out, put it down.

The interview(s): Have a good idea of how to answer “why are you doing engineering” and a fair idea of some general engineering topics.

No formal exams other than the questions.

Asked a couple of general questions about why I wanted to do engineering and one about how mobile phones worked (?!) but the bulk was maths and physics questions, based on the A-Level syllabus.

The maths quesions were on sketching unfamiliar function graphs, mechanics and integration. They were based on the A-Level syllabus, but there were plenty of things I hadn’t done, so I just told them and they didn’t seem to be put off.

Casual clothes. I wasn’t going to take a suit down with me and the leaflet said it didn’t matter.

Mansfield: Nice setting, smaller than I expected. Good location.
Keble: Beautiful, big place with lots going on. Excellent location for science area (esp. engineering)

The room was nice and big, but seemed a bit run down.

They seemed approachable and friendly.
