Decisions about the application

The English tutors are great at Hertford!

Preparation

no

Mock interviews.

Mock interviews are great for getting used to talking about the subject you wish to study in an intellectual way.

Interview

no

ELAT.

no

Yes. I submitted a piece of AS coursework on a Shakespeare play. However, most people had submitted their A2 coursework after completing that early.

no

No.

The first one was about an unseen peice of verse that I had to talk about for 25 minutes – enjoyed this.

The second was a general chat about literature.

I was not asked why I applied for English or why that college in particular.

A few questions were based on my personal statement. Otherwise, it was all about literature that I’d been reading beyond my A Level syllabus.

Smart clothes.

Final stage

Hated it.

Astonished that the tutors were impressed by me! Needless to say – I was very happy.

Looking back

Definitely.

Try your best, but don’t work so hard that you have to give up having a social life 🙂

Don’t set your heart on Oxford or Cambridge; they are great universities but there are other great ones too!
