Decisions about the application

tutorial system and the chance to be taught by the leading researchers in their specific areas of interest

went to visit both and just liked oxford more

i love english literature and the prospect of fully immersing myself in the study of it for three years really excited me

the tutors’ interests matched my own, it seemed like a friendly college at open day and there was a girl from my school who was already there reading english

Preparation

no

it was on offer but as i applied post-a level and was already working, i was unable to take advantage of this

read lots! probably go for depth in a few areas rather than try and cover lots of genres/authors superficially

Interview

yes

ELAT

yes

1 essay

no

fine – not at all scary. the tutors do try to put you at ease and they weren’t trying to catch you out. they are keen to let you talk about the topics that interest you and then try and challenge/extend you opinions.

i had 4 in total; 3 at lmh and 1 at corpus. at lmh, 2 were more general, discussing my a level texts, essay submitted and personal statement and then i had a third in which i analysed a poem (not everyone had a third interview). at corpus, it was a longer interview of about 30 mins, which covered both poetry analysis and a more general discussion.

just about things i’d written on my personal statement – check to see the interests of your tutors before interview to see which of your interests they’re most likely to pick up on

trousers, shirt and cardigan
it felt appropriate although more casual would have been fine

Impressions

lmh seemed pretty relaxed and friendly

fairly large room, mine was ensuite

not bad – standard school food

they were all really nice

everyone was really friendly and helpful

Final stage

nervous!

my letter arrived a day earlier than they had said it would so i wasn’t expecting it which made it a bit less stressful
obviously, i was really happy when i saw i’d been made an offer

Looking back

yes

try not to worry too much – it’s not as bad as you think it will be
