Decisions about the application

Because I thought it Oxford was the best university in the country, for both Modern Languages and English Oxford has the biggest departments

Cambridge don’t do English and Modern Languages

Because I wanted to extend my knowledge of literature with french literature

I chose worcester originally, because i thought it looked great and it is quite central

Preparation

yes

Individual teachers gave me some help, I had a mock interview which was completely unlike like the real thing

Read lots and lots, and go and see plays and films of the books you’re reading so you’ve got a lot to talk about. read widely, but have a couple of things that you specialise in

Interview

no

yes

two essays for both french and english- they were both dreadful so they couldn’t have been that important for my application!

yes

french grammar, my mark was the equivalent of an oxford fail so same as above

really enjoyable- they were moderately casual but I was prepared for some degree of grilling. i felt they went well and that I had got on with the tutors

In French I spoke about Baudelaire, Macbeth and Sartre, and studied a ridiculously difficult extract- a modern poem in english. I also spoke in French about Bonjour Tristesse shortly

English I analysed On My First Sonne by Ben Jonson, then I spoke a bit about James Joyce and Virginia Woolf. Then I spoke about Hamlet and the differences in Beowulf translations

I was just encouraged to talk about what I’d read and was questioned on the extract. There were no specific questions other than those relating to what I said I’d read.

I wore smart trousers and a v neck jumper, I didn’t want to look too formal, but I made an effort not to look scruffy. I saw barely anyone in suits

Impressions

Brasenose seemed friendly

my room on interview was horrible but all other accommodation in Brasenose is great

It was nothing special but it seems to be getting better

Friendly, not too intimidating.

Friendly and helpful

Final stage

Nervous, but not too worried about the result

I was at a friend’s house so my mum rang- I was quite excited but nervous about meeting the grade requirement

Looking back

definitely

read lots, but not too formally- tutors seem to like blossoming interest, nothing too rehearsed or stiff. enjoy your time at interview whether you get in or not- be prepared for a gentle grilling, don’t let it get to you.
