Decisions about the application

First I was adament that I wouldnt, but my AS results kind of inspired me (!), and I eventually warmed to the idea. Also, I love old buildings (superficial I know). + the tutorial system.

I didn’t look at Cambridge – it was quite a random decision but I went to Oxford for a day which confirmed that I liked it

Again I was lucky – I decided to apply to Oxford quite late and considered Keble and St Peters, but didn’t know much about any of them. My mum’s friend went to St johns and loved it. I think I made another lucky random decision.

Preparation

yes

I had one mock interview with our chair of governers because she went to Cambridge (about 70 years ago). It was a bit useful but not much like the real thing.

I rushed it but said something about liking the college and being motivated.

Interview

no

no

yes

One hour written test for which you couldn’t really prepare. Kind of like compresension.

There were three interviewers; the two law tutors and a very scary woman who was a barrister. I was very nervous but actually really enjoyed it. Bit embarassed that I sat for half an hour with my big winter coat on. oops.

First they asked me about A level PE and I managed to convince thm that its not a doss – dont be affraid if you do ‘unconventional’ subjects. Then we talked for ages about cloning which turned into a gig ethical discussion.

If I had taken my coat off they would have seen by fluffy jumper (it was very cold) and smartish trousers.

Impressions

It was lovely – big and beatiful with good facilities.

I had an old room which was nice. It was quite big with a sink and fireplace, but the best thing was that it had a fridge. It was also nice and warm.

Good

They seemed to put pepper on everyting, including the rice pudding, but cooked breakfast and waitress service was nice.

They were very ‘to the point’ but were friendly and und understanding

They were very willing to give advice and seemed very normal and friendly.

Final stage

It was my best Christmas present as I got it on Christmas Eve. Extra special coz no one has ever got in to Oxford from my school before

Looking back

yep coz it was really fun living there for three days and meeting people… and I got an offer

The most useful thing I did was look on the internet at pages like this, to see what the interview would be like.

Go for it, you don’t need a flawless academic record and it doesn’t matter if you do PE coz i revolutionised the tutors! Be keen at the interview and try to enjoy it.
