Decisions about the application

I felt I needed the challenge of hard work to keep my university years in line

By going to open days for both

Again by open day

Preparation

yes

My college helped me fill out all of my forms, held separate meetings for candidates, then mock interviews for people who had received interview oppurtunities.

My advice is to make sure the knowledge you have of the material you have covered is sound, and don’t worry about any material you haven’t covered, you are not expected to know everything, otherwise what would be the point in you studying for another 3 years?

Interview

no

no

yes

I had to take one two and a half hour exam and I prepared for it by watching TV in the JCR

I got interviewed by two different tutors for Maths at Teddy Hall, then by one at Lincoln.

The questions were all solely Maths based, totally impersonal, they just wanted to see how my mind worked

I wore a suit because I wanted to make a good impression

Impressions

The colleges are all peaceful, but sometimes with tourists allowed in some parts. They are all beautiful, and give of the impression of being full of intelligent people

The size of rooms vary (obviously), but most are medium to large. There are showers in all staircases, and baths in some too. Some colleges have moderate cooking facilities too, although all will provide every meal for you in hall

Edible but not great

Some meals are definitel better than others. You will learn pretty quickly what these are…..

The tutors are the most intelligent people you could ever hope to meet (at least in maths). They will answer any and every question you have. Brasenose Maths tutors in particular are very caring and wish every student of theirs to do well. The work will be marked and handed back on time, and every problem you have will be addressed. This is the place to come if you want to learn

Most college students don’t even come close to any stereotypes you may hear,(some do though), but no matter who you are you will find at least several people who are on the same wavelength here. Everyone is really friendly in general as well

Final stage

At first I received a letter of rejection from St Edmund hall, but a couple of days later an offer from Brasenose

Looking back

Yes, because I feel that this is the place where I have found my closest friends and been allowed to gain my independence with the promise of something to fall back on.

Be yourself at all times. Never pretend to be something you aren’t, otherwise you won’t be happy
