Decisions about the application

Academic reputation, college system

I have lived near Oxford so I’m familiar with the surrounding area and like the place.

Rcommended as being good for Maths, close to the town centre and the Maths Institute and I liked the buildings’ architecture.

Preparation

no

I had a couple of practice interviews and was encouraged to work ahead in Maths to finish the syllabus in preparation for the exam and interviews

Be prepared to discuss your personal statement but there isn’t much preparation you can do for the questions as they are looking for how you think as the problem will probably be unfamiliar.

Interview

no

no

yes

There was a Maths exam. I had a previous paper and tried to revise most of my Maths syllabus, although the style of questioning was different to A Level exams.

There was some discussion of my personal statement as an ice breaker and then I was given some Maths questions to solve.

Why Maths? Why Oxford?

I wore a suit to give the impression that I was serious about it and look smart.

Impressions

I liked the older parts of it; it looked really great and I liked the atmosphere.

The room I was in had a bed, wardrobe, drawers, sink, shelves, table, desk and chairs. There was a toilet and shower between 6. Fairly large as student bedrooms go.

Good

Friendly, wanted to put you at ease.

Also friendly, organised quizzes, videos, and games, willing to help and offer advice.

Final stage

I already knew I had an offer as I had a phone call from the tutors two days after returning home from interview. The letter told my exactly what my offer was.

Looking back

I would as I’m looking forward to going there if I get my grades and I had a really good time when I was down for interview.

Go for it, be prepared for the exams as much as you can be, and be yourself.
