Decisions about the application

No reason not to – otherwise you’ll never know if you could have got in or not.

Went to both, but just had this feeling I’d enjoy Oxford more.

Small, central, seemed friendly in the prospectus. Had visited it before and liked it.

Preparation

yes

Yep – had extra maths lessons and a trial interview. The interviews are never what you are expecting though.

erm… nope.

Interview

no

no

yes

Yep – maths paper on the first day. Had the extra lessons to try and develop the techniques to use. Also got practice papers off the internet.

I had 2 absolutely terrible Com Sci interviews, and thought i had lost my place at Oxford. The tutors made me look really stupid – not intentionally, but i didn’t know what to say and i sounded so stupid! But then i had another one at Worcester, which was really good, and a maths interview at Oriel, which was OK. I didn’t give up for those two.

The com sci interviews were problems like stuff about coloured beads, cards, probability etc. The maths one was going over a problem from the paper set on the first day to do with counters on a board.

Smart trousers and shirt – it was too cold to wear a skirt suit.

Impressions

Oriel is nice, but really small. I liked it being right next to the High Street. Worcester is beautiful – has great grounds with the lake and playing field. I stayed in Exeter before, and loved that too – slightly larger than Oriel, but really, they’re all pretty much the same.

Rooms are good – i had ensuite, and you get a reasonable space to yourself. In Exeter College I had a separate ‘lounge’ and bedroom, but no bathroom. My room at Oriel was bedroom and bathroom.

Good

Breakfast was great – fried, cereal, toast – everything. And it’s all free when you stay for interviews.

Friendly, although i didn’t get to speak to them that much.

Final stage

I had a phone call from Mr. Spivey at Oriel saying I had an offer. That was it really – then i went out to celebrate.

Looking back

Yep – it’s just great to go and stay at the college for a bit – no matter whether you get in or not.

Just relax and enjoy!
