Decisions about the application

Within the top 5 for my subject.

I’d always had my heart set on Oxford, can’t remember why.

Large computation department, recommendation from friends.

Preparation

yes

Some meetings to discuss interview technique and application process.

When your school tutor tells you that there isn’t a seperate application form for Oxbridge, don’t believe him.

Interview

no

no

yes

I did the specimen paper on the website.
The two and a half hour paper that we were set was x100 harder, and depressed us all.

For the computation interview, we discussed my answers to some questions from sheet I had been given to study earlier.

For computation, I was asked to optimize an algorith to find the highest, 3, 7, 15 then n numbers. Also to explain my reasoning for several of my answers to other questions. In Mathematics I was asked about the conditions in wich a cubic equation has two, one or no solutions. Then using calculus, to maximize the area of a rectangle given a fixed perimeter, then volume of a cuboid.

Shirt, tie, smart trousers. To be formal, but not OTT like a suit.

Impressions

Very nice grounds, no perpendicular or parallel walls in my room.

30ft ceiling in main hall, size of accommodation varying.
Nice computer room.

Excellent

Very tasty, something to look forward to.

Friendly and enthusiastic.

Great company, where else could I discuss the integral of x^(x^x) over breakfast, and have a hope of someone else understanding?

Final stage

Due to administrative cockups with my 2nd college not doing my course anymore, and 3rd college interviews never being arranged (for a very good reason). I was told “unofficially” before leaving the college I was going to have an offer.
So I opened the letter, grunted, then went back to sleep.
I yawned, and went back to bed.

Looking back

Most certainly.

Go for it, it’s a great experience .
