Decisions about the application

I liked the scientific course and Cambridge is a nice city.

I preferred the course at Cambridge because you get a wider choice of subjects in the third year

Pembroke had a good location, was pretty and other people from my college had gone there in the past

Preparation

yes

Yep we had mock interviews and extra science lessons were put on to help us in the interview

Read around medical issues in the news and be prepared to talk about a disease in depth

Interview

yes

I had to take the MVAT. I didn’t really revise but I did look at the example test on the website. The essay was quite difficult but the science papers werent too bad.

no

no

At Pembroke the first interview was horrible. I was asked lots of questions on medicine, such as why do all cells have a death wish?! The first question was: define disease-and he laughed at my answer!!! The second interview was with a doctor. She was really nice sand the questions focused mainly on my personal statement. I was also asked to talk about a genetic disease. At Girton the first interviewer asked me about genetic engineering and why do we get cancers and drug testing. This was ok and the interviewer was really nice. The second interview focused on my work experience, drugs testing again and cloning. I also got asked about scanners which I knew nothing about!

Black trousers, a shirt and a brown jacket. Smart but comfortable!

Impressions

Girton seemed really nice. The students were helpful and it had a relaxed atmosphere.

The room was nice. It was quite big but didnt even have a wash basin!!! and the nearest shower was down a flight of stairs!

Good. Avoid the lemon chicken!

The tutor who interviewed me seemed really nice.

Less snobby than at Pembroke-they were all really nice!

Final stage

After Pembrokes interview I though I’d never see Cambridge again! So I was surprised to be put in the pool. Part of me was pleased but I was dreading another interview!!! Girton rang and I was really glad I’d got in

Looking back

Definately. Even though the interview was scary I would of always wondered if I could have got in if I hadn’t applied.

Just read around your subject and keep things in perspective-its not the end of the world if you don’t get in-and after all the interview only lasts 20 minutes if it’s really bad!
