Decisions about the application

Best university in the country
Amazing place to live
For medicine, you can move to london after three years

Oxford is a larger town – i didn’t want to live somewhere as small as cambridge!

I wanted a central medium-sized (and pretty) college

Preparation

yes

a couple of mock interviews

be prepared to be absolutely interrogated on anything you mention in your personal statement, references, or anything you bring up in your interview

Interview

yes

i had to sit the BMAT exam about a month before interviews, which you can’t really prepare for

no

no

why i want to do medicine at oxford, and then loads of very detailed questions about how the kidney worked. In another interview they asked me about english a level, tissue typing, and they also gave me a badger’s skull and i had to work out what it was (which i did)

smartish clothes – trousers, shirt, smart v-necked jumper – i didn’t want them to notice what i was wearing!

Impressions

i had interviews at exeter and new – both really pretty, although exeter is very small

the room i was staying in at exeter was tiny, but i saw other people’s rooms, which were much bigger

Edible but not great

seemed really intelligent – i’d like to get to know them better!

really friendly

Final stage

i was much more pissed off than i thought i would be… it made me think what was the point of working to get good grades in everything else if i wasn’t going to get into oxford

Looking back

yes – if i didn’t apply i would just wonder what would have happened if i had

don’t take anything for granted – i did very well in my BMAT exam (we got the marks back before interview) so i thought i’d get in, but i didn’t
