Decisions about the application

Science based nature of medicine course
Repuatationn of University
Had often thought of it from a young age
Good exam results meant that option was open to me

I went to both and prefered the look of Oxford
Oxford’s prospectus was better in terms of presentation and content
Without A-level Maths most of Cam’s NST was no avalible to me
Dyslexia insitute coincided with own interest

High position on the Norrington table (league table)
High repuatation of food
Friendliness of staff
General appearance of college and brochure

Preparation

yes

Very poor – they were disorganised and the teacher in charge did not seem to know very much about the process 1 general practive interview – not science (they couldn’t get anyone aparently) I arranged 1 myself with a consultant. It was useful as an intoduction to medical interviews.

OAF: A very simple form – if you have any specific interests relevant to Oxford enter them here

Interview: Remain calm, although challenging it is a good experence and I enjoyed all but 1 of mine.
Practice interviews are useful but by no means essential.

Interview

yes

BMAT exam in November.
Prep is difficult but a revision of GCSE Science and Maths is a good idea. Try practice paper from www.bmat.org.uk. WORK QUICKLY- you have around 30sec per question.

no

no

2 at Brasenose college
3 at Merton collge (preferred choice)

On estimating blood volume; what would i bring to uni; describe an object; identify death rates; and reasons amnioscentesis; bird behaviour; drug testing; photoelectric effect and compton scatter; NHS problems; Designer babies

Suit and tie. Looks professional. They wore them as did everyone else

Impressions

Merton was quite excellent. Seems very wealthy, friendly, helpful, beautiful buildings and grounds, quiet, easy vehicular acess in Merton street
Brasenose was very nice, but looked a bit poorer compared to Merton

Brasenose- faced High street and was consequently noisy, slightly small, delapidated carpets, only a bath- no shower, well heated, bed short and slightly hard.

Excellent. Vegetarians and specials well catered for.

Very interested, alert, helpful.

Very pleasant

Final stage

It was an e-mail – I was going away the day it was posted so they agreed to send me one.
Very happy – the culmination of months of hard work

Looking back

Yes, it is what I want. However took a lot of time and effort, but you don’t get good things in life easily do you?

Look smart – Good finger nails for Med- Doctor’s do not have dirty ones.
Go for it – or else you may regret it.
Plase contact me if I can help in anyway.
