Decisions about the application

Obviously coz its a great uni, but also I like the idea of the colleges, so you can get to know the people really well.

hmmm, Oxford just kinda felt right, and its a much better English and History course (no splitting the “tripos” or whatever).

It has a reputation for being quite Liberal and open-minded (the least “Oxfordy” of the Oxford colleges), and some of the frinds I have up there said the people were cool.

I got a practice interview in both subjects (which I really screwed up).

I know its easy for me to say, but really try to relax. The first interview I had went the worst because I was so nervous I couldn’t form a coherent sentence. I was much better when I had calmed down and was able to talk about what interests me.

I submitted a long essay on Faustus and a shorter one on Beloved for English, and a timed essay on Nazi foreign policy and coursework on british democracy for History. All in all a hell of a lot of work.

I had 5 interviews (3 history and 2 English), but all were quite short. The tutors were really nice. The guy interviewing me about Germany was German and seemed to know everything, which was a little scary. Wadham also has a JCR with pool table which I made good use of, and there were also a number of good bars nearby. Believe it or not, it was good fun.

The interviews were really just glorified conversations, but it was all on subjects which I had been studying recently (although the more you can bring in about other areas the better). The wierdest question I got was “What place that you have been to recently interested you the most historically?”

smart trousers and Shoes. with a smartish (for me) jumper. I really don’t think they care though, after all, they do teach students, who aren’t renowned for dressing smartly.

BRILLIANT! My tutor at college didn’t want me to apply to Wadham coz its so hard to get in (HA!), but do, coz its great. nice buildings, nice people, nice tutors….etc

I shared a pretty large sitting room with another guy in the old part of the college, but we had our own bedroom. Showers and toilets down in the basement, which was a pain in the backside. The room was freezing until I worked out how to use the heater.

potato’s were inescapable, and came in many disguises (chips, potato wedges, mash, boiled, raw etc)

They were great. I know everyone says so, but they really do want you to do well, and aren’t trying to catch you out.

You really couldn’t go anywhere without starting a conversation with someone. They were all really friendly and talkative.

Final stage

I wasn’t expecting it so soon (took just a week), so I just opened it without thinking about it too hard. Afterwards, when it had sunk in, the feeling was amazing.

Looking back

Definately, I’ve enjoyed every minute so far.

Just relax and have fun, Oxford is a great place.
