Decisions about the application

Facilities (Taylor Library and Modern Languages Centre)and the Tutorial System of course, Collegiate University similar atmosphere to Boarding School where I had been for 7 years, and close to home (45 minutes away by car.)

Looked in detail at the course differences, and did not think I would benefit from the Tripos System as much as a simple 4 year course. Oxford also much closer to home than Cambridge.

Focus on German Jewish Literature and option to do module on German Philosophy as well as Philology (Etimology,)College Fellow particularly well adversed in Brechtian Literature, one of my particular interests. Module on Nationalism and Cultural Development.

Hertford had a very relaxed and friendly atmosphere, the buildings themselves are particularly beautiful and it is one of the smaller colleges. Very central location (opposite Bodleian Library) and the only college to have a bar run by the students!

Interview Preparation with independant experts, recorded interviews on video and discussed afterwards. Oxbridge open day visits, as well as talks given at school. Small tutorial groups (5 max.) received individual advice from their tutors throughout Sixth form, and lesson periods set aside for help with UCAS applications.

Know your personal statement inside out! Be prepared to talk in detail about anything you have mentioned, as well as in your written work. Check out the course details on the website, download information for the prelim. course if you have to, pick out the areas that particularly interest you and be prepared to discuss why!
Know your Grammar and Vocabulary, as I had an oral vocabulary test as part of the interview itself!
Understand Literary criticism, know how to analyse and discuss techniques and purpose.
Know your Literature! Read up on different Literary movements and know the works/protagonists that inspired them.

Two pieces, compulsory for one to be in the target language. I sent two German pieces. Make sure they are very different, ie. cultural or historical critique (film studies) and prose or verse analysis.

Yes, 30 minute Grammar and Vocabulary test tak
