Decisions about the application

I wanted to go to the best university possible and prove to myself I could do it.

I really didn’t like the atmosphere in Oxford and preferred the course at Cambridge – less literature and more flexible

I wanted to go to a small college, and it has its own theatre and drama group.

Preparation

no

Do the form really neatly, and choose a good photo – first impressions always count. Make the personal statement relevant.
Read around the subject. Read around the subject. Read around the subject. Read around the subject. Read around the subject. Read around the subject.

Interview

no

yes

I had to submit two pieces of written work, which was difficult as I had already left school – I chose two German essays as they were really the only things I could find – though I won’t recommend doing it like that!

yes

Yes – expected a grammar test (as written in the letter) but had to appraise and criticise a text in english! So no useful preparation.

I was given a extract to translate and talk about in both interviews – and had to talk about general things, why cambridge, why the course etc. The first interviewer was lovely, the second an aspiring Jeremy Paxman, I think they go in for the good cop bad cop routine.

What do you think about the passage, have you read literature apart from your course set texts etc.

Wore what I felt was comfortable and smart – a denim skirt, boots, and a pretty smart top.

Impressions

I really liked the very friendly relaxed atmosphere.

My room for the interview was terrible – had a window onto the landing and the light was on all night – felt like permanent daytime. But it was a decent size, and they are all singles with at most 8 to a bathroom.

Edible but not great.
Well, the self catering facilities are awful – so it has to be halls. I’m vegetarian so the choice wasn’t brilliant, but I’m assured it was an off day!

Really nice, and very helpful.

Really friendly – I asked one girl the way to Hall, and ended up going out to see a play with her and her mates!

Final stage

I screamed and screamed, and rang absolutely everybody.

Looking back

Oh god yeah – and I would definitely recommend applying after your A-levels, much less stress.

Try really hard not to panic – the interviews are there for you to show off, so don’t sit back take the initiative.
