Decisions about the application

Quality of resources

The Nat Sci course is very flexible and broadly based and that appealed to me over Oxford’s more specialised courses.

Preferred the Cambridge town environment – architecture, the Backs too.

I wanted to study science, as broadly as possible.
The quality of the labs was important.

Lovely architecture.
Central but not on the tourist trail
Not too small, not too big
Fair number of Nat Sci students at the college

Preparation

yes

No tuition but practice interviews were helpful (not for questions but to think more clearly about what I wanted to say.

Think about the subject – not just the syllabus. Be honest if you don’t know the answer. Read the prospectus and website. Have a couple of sensible questions prepared.

No

They were both quite short – less than 30 minutes each – but thorough.

One subject specific, one general interview

Subject one focused quite strongly on chemistry.
The general one was more wide ranging – some academic questions but also stuff on hobbies, college societies.

Black trousers, black and white top, black duffle coat.
Wear something reasonably smart that you still feel comfortable in. Also – layers are a good idea, it can warm in the college but freezing in Cambridge waiting between interviews

Impressions

Very professional but it would have been nice to have some sort of general waiting area, refreshments.

Final stage

Nervous – I was quite worried about an answer at the very end of the second interview.

Genuinely amazed at the EE offer – absolutely thrilled.

Looking back

Yes – beyond a doubt.

Prepare for the interview and the obvious questions – why Cambridge/why this college/ why this course. I found videoing an interview mock quite useful to see how my speech/body language appeared to the interviewer.
