Details about the offer

Cambridge. Imperial with their tight-assed ‘wait until oxbridge have given offers’ attitude can eat it. On second thoughts Imperial might be my second if they give me an offer…

Decisions about the application

It was inevitable… (Parent and Teacher pressures) Oh, and it would be nice to go there, just to see, you know?

Sciences are better in Cambridge – the self fulfilling prophecy

Personal recommendation, liked the atmosphere, centre of city

Ya, extra physics, chem (these sucked), bio (these sucked also). The physics was fun though.

The Forms: Don’t be too anal about neatness, hell they don’t care how your writing looks.

The interview(s): Get a lively interest, read some books (Gribbin I found interesting, though sometimes misleading). Have opinions on things you write about on the section 10. (Argue out your points with teachers). The questions asked at interview were to see if I was lively and interested and quick… (Don’t worry, I sucked at interview!)

3 of them, 1 admissions, 1 physics (how quick you are) 1 physics (how interested are you?)

I forget, but admissions was very informal and friendly; the physics one was about dropping stones into a well and timing the sound to find the depth, and also dropping bits of card of different width and s.a. at different angles.

Blazer, blue shirt, teddy bear tie, smart trousers. I’d go more casual if I were to do it again…

Friendly, got to know lots of the interviewees, as I stayed overnight. Do stay overnight, it’s damn helpful to settle and get to know your way around and other candidates as well.

1 room medium bed-sit size with table, sofa, wardrobes, shelves.

mmmmmm, even fruit corners at breakfast! I managed to eat a full English… most others were not hungry/too nervous?

Didn’t meet them outside interview.

Chatty, I managed to sit next to a mathematician of 5 years… he was very friendly, and got me some food (I was late for the first supper there) from the waitress type chick.

Final stage

I got a phone call from the housemaster. Relieved.

Looking back

Damn right I would – it was FUN! (In retrospect!)

Have lots of fun in and out of interview… I went with the attitude, ‘I may as well have a good time, it’ll probably be the last…’
