Decisions about the application

partly because i preferred the course here to the single science ones elsewhere, partly due to its reputation. i didn’t want to look back thinking if only…

preferred the natural sciences course compared to just a single science at Oxford

i liked it because of its informal reputation and beautiful surroundings. also, it has the highest intake of state school students which i thought i would prefer.

Preparation

yes

yes my tutor looked through my personal statement and checked it. i also had a mock interview with one of the governors – i’d recommend this as it lets you clarify what you’d say in the real thing and also it helps you gain some confidence.

The Forms: theres no need to say anything extra in addition to your personal statement unless its special – i didn’t

The interview(s): read around the subject – i read alot of scientific american magazine and if you can fit it in look at stuff you haven’t yet done in class. think about your reasons for applying – i wasn’t asked this but some of my friends were.

Interview

went with dad, had lunch then went to the 1st interview 15 mins early. depending on your parents i’d say its good idea to take one along – mine helped to take my mind off the interviews with inane chatter.i had 2 interviews, with 2 people each. the 1st one was ok, though i came across really dumb at the end. they were friendly enough though. 2nd interview went alot better (i think i knew what sort of thing to expect).they were both quite cheerful-it wasn’t the ordeal i expected.

integrate sin x (hadn’t done but mentioned i’d look at differentiating trig on my own) – did it by drawing the graph. then given a physics problem – had to prove something – had alot of guidance during this. talked about the coursework i’d brought. i also took an engineering project i’d done which both sets of interviewers seemed interested in as opposed the other coursework i’d brought(i think it helped to take something a bit unusual). talked about interests in chemistry and acid/base equilibria and interests in physics- cosmology

don’t worry what to wear, i wore a black jumper, jeans and my poshest, bestest trainers – it didn’t seem to matter though. other people there were pretty casual aswell.

Impressions

i liked it immediately. food was pretty good aswell. didn’t manage to see accomodation though so i can’t comment on it.

Good

surprisingly friendly. i came away from my interviews smiling and thinking that i’d like to be taught by these people

friendly and approachable – one came up to me when i was looking abit lost.

Final stage

i opened it telling myself i hadn’t got in but when i saw that i had i was really happy and immediately set about texting everyone!im still in shock

Looking back

yes coz i got in but i don’t know if i’d be saying that if i hadn’t – too much STRESS!

apply – you never know…
