Decisions about the application

Because i thought that i should give it a shot after doing better than expected in lower sixth modules. Sets you up for life-i hope!

Heard cambridge was more like boarding school! Had friends who were having a great time at oxford and it was closer to home

Open Application made – big mistake! I didn’t choose this college.

Not really as it was a very last minute decision so i hadnt attended all the oxbridge meetings that had gone on the previous term. Prepare early to avoid stress!

Not really, its pretty basic stuff. There’s no genius way to write your name and address

Yes, 2 essays, I did economics as it was the only subject i had studied before. 2 past paper questions that have to be marked by your teacher

yes one exam with all 3 subjects, quite tricky!

2 interviews, 1 economics, given data to analyse. 1 joint politics and philosophy, given examples and terms that were thought provoking and had to discuss them

What is a state? etc

Suits, though others didnt, i just felt that was better than jeans!

Nice college, but if you know anything you’ll know Hildas is all girls! put me off a bit at first but everyone was friendly and lovely surroundings

Sizeable room, own sink, shared toilet/showers etc. Food in dining hall ok

I’m a fussy eater so its best not to say anything!

Some were nice, others actually looked like your typical eccentric genius – generally very welcoming and helpful – they wanted me to get to the answer in the interviews so lead you to it

Ok, average people only a few highly intellectual snobs!

Final stage

Got letter as early christmas present! Offer of 3 As contrary to proving i could pay the fees! put me off a bit but this was just normal offer letter. Still hadnt decided but its always nice to have the choice!

Looking back

I’m here now and having a great time-even at Hildas! So of course i would do it again but rememer not getting in isnt the end of the world!

Read the papers – its a very topical subject and be prepared for anything in philosophy. Take time to think and dont let it throw you – just listen carefully and dont be afraid to ask to hear it again.

Make sure that you research into the colleges and come to open days and definitely dont do open application. There are some really great colleges here and once you choose your stuck with it so take your time.
