I will choose Oxford. Since my offer is unconditional, I do not need a backup- but if I did, I would definitely choose Imperial.

Decisions about the application

It’s world-knowned reputation.

Didn’t want to do natural sciences- couldn’t stand the pedantic nature of chemistry A-level, i suppose.

Friend who went last year said it was a happening place- it had better bloody be when I get there!!

No, just a mock interview prior to going up to Oxford

The Forms: Relax- it’s not a life-or-death situation! Don’t dig holes for yourself, and don’t add extra comments in the Oxford form unless you REALLY want to.

The interview(s): Concentrate on the subject, forget all the other crap you hear/read about.

yeah, a maths exam before interview. No real preparation. Just did some maths+f/maths past papers.

Stayed for nights. Two academic interviews + maths exam in the morning

proofs, graph sketching, series functions and lateral thinking about phase space. BUT, be warned, I asked the interviewer where these questions had come from (they were slighty odd!), he said that he’d come up with the concepts off the top of this head, and simply asked me to do proofs to see where I’d go with them.

shirt, tie, trousers. Not too much, and not too little.

went on the open day, was going to apply to Trinity. day before i filled out my ucas form, my friend told me about how great st anne’s was. the rest is history. Don’t worry TOO much about which college to apply to.

Quite nice rooms. Reminded me of an danish
sauna. balconies are pretty cool too. excellent heaters, i must say! (come on! it was -5oC outside 🙂

Edible but not great

big portions. you’ll live.

Dr Harnew is the absolute bollocks! Very cool guy to talk to. Dr Irwin was more intensive, but relaxed.

nice, easygoing…normal. i think it’s a total fallacy that whole colleges can just happen to be filled with socially-inept turnips. Get real, use your head.

Final stage

Obviously pleased. Glad to be given the opportunity to show what I can do, but this is only the start of the race.

Looking back

yes. same reason as before

go for it. but don’t fall into the trap of applying and hoping for the best come December. Know your stuff!
